I highly recommend reading their materials including the complaint. The Southern Poverty Law Center has summaries of current and historic civil rights cases. Online Resourcesĭolen Perkins-Valdez provides important connections between her novel and the case of Relf v. If you are not familiar with this history, I recommend reading the book before the guide. Note that this guide, like all of the guides, may contain spoilers. Perkins-Valdez creates a novel that opens the door wide to contemplation of our society. I highly recommend this novel as a gateway to discussions of systemic racism, economic gaps, health care for Black Women, our discomfort in raising these issues, the importance of knowing history, how one person can make a difference, the balance between pity and empowering folks and so many more topics. At the same time she revealed to me an important piece of United States history, taking the reader to 1972 and the case of Relf v. Dolen Perkins-Valdez created individuals with hopes, good intentions, flaws, barriers to overcome and expertly presented them as full human beings, not individuals to be pitied or looked down upon. I didn’t expect to become as emotionally connected to the main characters as I did- to all of them- Civil, India, Erica, Ty, Mace, Lou, Mrs. This book caught me completely off guard.
